Toddler Fashion

I often hear from other parents how boys fashion isn't as diverse as girls fashion.  Boys fashion is "boring" or doesn't have enough choices, unlike girls fashion.  Well, I suppose that is true, since boys aren't "supposed" to wear skirts or dresses.  If boys fashion allowed them to wear skirts and dresses, then I'm sure there would be no complaints about the difference between boys and girls clothes.  I think the argument that boys clothes are more boring than girls clothing is an argument not worth making.  There are plenty of styles and clothing choices for boys, from a rock-n-roll style, to preppy, and everything in-between.  It's certainly even more acceptable now to put your son in purple or pink, than it was 5 years ago.  In fact, if you choose a purple or pink collared shirt for your son, you are being fashion forward.  You can even be creative with shoes, or vests and sweaters.  If anything, I find that certain STORE selections are limited, with boys clothing leaning more towards "machoism", and girls clothes leaning towards "unicorns and rainbows".  If you find that a store's selection of clothing is limited, look elsewhere.  Many stores (and parents) lean towards dressing their children in "stereotypical" styles and colours, simply so that their child will eventually learn what is expected of them in the fashion world.  Blue for boys, pink for girls.  Robots for boys, rainbows for girls.  Insects for boys, and cupcakes for girls.  I hope that with a son, I can be as diverse as I'd like with his fashion choices.  I'd love for him to be unique in his fashion choices, and not just have him choose Transformer pajamas, and Star Wars t-shirts.  I hope he learns that fashion is a personal choice, and not just commanded by societal pressures.  These are all wishes, as I said, as I do not have a baby boy yet.  We will see how my own shopping experiences turn out, in the near future, with a little boy in tow.  It will certainly be different from shopping with Little B, but how different, I can only guess.  And I hope it won't be as limiting as some mom's have been telling me...
