Clowns are scary beings. All painted white, gaudy red lips, red puff-ball for a nose, bright coloured hair, giant feet. I have no idea why some people think that clowns are funny. There's nothing human about them.
Their laugh sounds like a high-pitched cackle. You can't truly see their expressions because of all that paint. If something like that came lunging at me, whether they were holding a stuffed doll or balloon, I'd turn and run the other way. If I had a kid, and someone did that to my kid, I'd smack the clown.
Ever since I've watched Stephen King's It, and ever since I've seen that one scene with the clown in Poltergeist, I've been horribly frightened of clowns. In more academic and sci-fi terms, clowns are simulacra. They are simulacra of people, simulacra of living dolls/toys. If you've seen Bladerunner, think of that last scene, where Daryl Hannah is dressed up like a doll, and sitting in the dark. That is creepy. That is frightening.
Clowns?? I'll watch them on tv, I'll watch them in movies, but in real person?? No thank you!
