Big Rigs on Smaller Roads

I live on a busy-ish street, but it is by no means a main thoroughfare.  However, it has become increasingly more busy due to highway and road construction nearby.  Big rigs are even using our street to get from Point A to Point B.

The problem with this, is that our street is narrow.  There is also a steep hill, with a nice bend.  Every year, there is at least one car accident on our street.  Actually, I'd guess that there are actually at least two accidents per year on our street.  These accidents usually involve smaller cars, like Hondas, Toyotas, etc..

This early evening around 6pm, a large flat bed tow truck was going down the steep curve, and it met an SUV going the opposite direction.  The result was not pretty and I am guessing it ended badly, with either the driver of the SUV meeting a fatal end, or at least in serious condition.  I am hoping there were no passengers.  The doors of the SUV were ripped off by, I'm guessing, jaws of life.  The front of the vehicle was smashed and caved in.  Seeing the SUV sent chills through me, and made me feel so melancholy and angry.  Angry, because a large flat-bed tow truck should not have been driving down our street.  I did not witness this accident, but my husband and I drove by it, as we took our kiddos out to dinner.  I also saw the SUV being towed past our house, later that evening, and it literally made me feel sick.

Big rigs have no business using smaller streets to bypass construction zones - it is not safe and can result in loss of lives.  I don't know what I want to say with this particular post, except that I'm pissed off and feeling sad for the family (or families) that has to deal with the aftermath of this accident.  A 10 minute short-cut is NOT worth negatively changing your life, and the lives of others, forever!
