Today is the official last day of summer, and here in West Coast BC, it is moody and raining out. Yes, moody. The sky is weepy, the drivers are crazy, and the morning is lazy. Moody Thursday.
It's also Garbage Day Thursday. In my area of my suburban city, garbage trucks and recycling trucks began their early-morning routes this morning.
A while back, my city began collecting kitchen scraps, separate from regular garbage pick-up. It's a great program, since the biodegradables, are separated from everything else, and can be used for composting/fertilizers, etc.. The downside of that is I've been collecting my food scraps in a bin (wrapped in newspaper) and that seems to create mold inside the garbage bin. Last night, while emptying my little bin into the outside garbage bin, spores of mold were kicked up, and I had to hold my breath and walk to a different part of the garage to breathe. Who knows what mold spores will do to the body?? Mold always worries me. I've read that some people freeze their kitchen scraps and then will throw it out the morning of, so mold and rot is not an issue. Somehow I just don't like the idea of freezing garbage... Just seems strange to me...
In any case, if anyone else has ideas on how to handle kitchen scraps, post a comment! Unfortunately we do not compost in our yard, mostly out of lack of knowledge on how to do it...
