In the City

In the street
in daylight
on the road
in your home
where you work

the boldness of crimethe blood runneth over

A typical morning with morning's dayglow shining bright
a child dresses, has breakfast, looks forward to a new day
a short goodbye to daddy, to daycare with mommy he goes

In the car, safely buckled, day's brightness shines on
Traffic passes by

And creeping by, in the glowy brightness, a creature lurks
of greed, of hate and vengeance, of ego and righteousness
in his hands a Reaper's scythe

Guilty by association, the Reaper judges: Penalty is death

And on this morning drive, the child watches:

Reaper at the window
Scythe is raised where mommy sits
Reaper's menace unleashed

Blood runneth over and

a child sits crying alone
