Blaming the Online Provider

I've been hearing a lot about Facebook, and how schools, etc., are starting to block student access to the site, due to online bullying. Some people are blaming Facebook, while, others are blaming the people themselves.

With new technology, comes new ways of communicating. Through texting, cellphones, and online interfaces. Somehow, kids aren't "street smart" enough to realize that any information they put out there, can be recorded (or saved) and relayed to everyone else. Kids aren't savvy enough to realize that what they say or do WILL come back to haunt them.

Online bullying - why is it such a phenomena? What's bullying to others is comedic to some. Think of prank shows like Punkd. Think of the success of Borat. There is scripted comedy, situational comedy... and most of the time, everyone is in on the joke! A joke is taken too far when people become "victims" of jokes through abuse, or mistreatment. The online platform is just another way to relay the "jokes" and "pranks" to a wider audience. The scale of the humility is increased due to the wider audience - people from all over the world can watch a video of someone being tripped, etc..

Why do people derive humour at the humility of others?

I don't think it's funny. It's sad.

For me it comes down to parenting.
Basically if you raise your kids to respect people/property and continue to make them feel good about themselves then most of these problems wouldnt exist. Unfortunately you have parents who let the internet/tv do their parenting for them and that's why we have annoying people like yourself whose venemous hate hurt us all. kiddding wgbc
